For 400 years, Stirling's prisoners had been kept in the stinking overcrowded and wretched conditions of the old Tolbooth Jail until pressure for prison reform the new purpose built Stirling Old Town Jail was opened in 1847. Nowadays the the jail paints a frightening picture of what it would have been like to be imprisoned in the 1800's.As you travel round the dark corridors inspecting the cells you experience the atmosphere of jail life: creaking hinges, a shuffle of feet, time hanging heavily in the air. You may be in 'luck' and a desperate prisoner might even try to make good his escape.

Open All year. Apr-Sept: 09.30-18.00 daily (last admission 17.00). Oct-Mar 09.30-16.00 daily.
