The Bannockburn Heritage Centre is situated at one of the most important historic sites in Scotland. On the battlefield nearby, in June 1314, King Robert the Bruce routed the forces of King Edward II to win freedom for the Scots from English domination. A few yards from the Centre is the famous Boresone site which by tradition was Bruce's command post before the battle. This site is enclosed by the Rotunda focusing on the approach route of the English army to its objective - Stirling Castle. The Rotunda was inaugurated by Her Majesty the Queen in June 1964, when she also unveiled the equestrian statue of Bruce by Pilkington Jackson which was presented to the Trust. The Centre, run by The National Trust for Scotland, provides an exhibition - The Kingdom of the Scots - opened in 1987 and updated in 1996, together with an audio-visual presentation of the Battle of Bannockburn; display panels at Rotunda.
